How to make cough syrup for a natural way to reduce the symptoms of cough and cold. I have three natural cough syrup recipes that you can make at home to reduce coughing. These recipes use the medicinal properties of whiskey, honey, and peppermint for natural relief.
Old Time Cough Syrup Recipe
There are few things more annoying than not being able to stop coughing. Before that thing that went around, I had a cough that lasted over two months.
I tried the over the counter cough medicines, and I even got a prescription to stop the coughing.
Nothing helped. So I turned to a homemade cough syrup with whiskey and peppermint.
Now, I’m not much of a whiskey drinker. Give me a White Claw over a shot glass any day, but a home remedy cough syrup with whiskey works better for a cough for me than anything from the store.
I have three old time cough syrup recipes: a whiskey, honey, and lemon recipe, the traditional hot toddy, and a homemade cough syrup with whiskey and peppermint.
These recipes are easy to make, and they are shelf stable. Label the jars and put them in a cupboard away from children.
These are a homemade cough syrup with alcohol, so they are for adults 21 and over. Don’t give them to children. Don’t drive or otherwise operate heavy machinery.
Always consult a doctor. This is not medical advice.

Will Whiskey Help a Cough?
I couldn’t find any research about making a home remedy cough syrup with whiskey. However, there are a lot of anecdotal stories about it helping.
Personally, it helps me a lot. Sometimes it’s the only thing that helps me.
Your blood vessels dilate when you drink alcohol, which acts like a natural decongestant to clear mucus.
If you drink your natural cough syrup recipe hot, the steam from the cup also helps act like a decongestant.
Whiskey also helps relax you, and it can slow down your heart rate and respiration rate. It’s not a lot, but it can help reduce coughing.
When you’ve been coughing for hours, you get stressed. Alcohol can help reduce stress temporarily so you can relax.
How Much Whiskey Should I Drink for a Cough?
You don’t need to slam back shots to get relief. One to two ounces of whiskey is usually enough for relief.
Which Alcohol is Best for a Cough?
When making a homemade cough syrup with alcohol, you can choose which alcohol to use. I don’t keep a lot of spirits in the cabinet, so I use what we have.
You can substitute rum or bourbon for the whiskey.

- ¼ cup raw honey
- 1 lemon cut into slices
- 6-8 peppermint candies
- 8 ounce canning jar
Directions
- Put 3 or 4 peppermint candies and lemon slices in the jar.
- Add half of the raw honey.
- Place another 3 to 4 peppermint pieces on top of the honey.
- Add the rest of the honey.
- Add whiskey to fill the jar.
- Place the lid on the jar and shake gently. Let sit for 8 hours. Shake it every few hours to help it mix.
- After 48 hours, remove the lemon slices.
To use, take 1 tablespoon every 4 hours. You can also add 1 tablespoon to a cup of hot tea. This is shelf stable for several months.
