Turmeric Hot Chocolate Recipe
While I'm making an effort to reduce sugar to reduce inflammation, sometimes I just want a sweet treat in the evenings. Now that the weather is getting cold, hot chocolate is my drink of choice after dinner.
However, I don't want the added sugar in the evenings. I enjoy this sugar free hot cocoa mix recipe with stevia, but I also want an anti inflammatory hot chocolate.
Now I make a turmeric cinnamon hot chocolate recipe. You can also make this turmeric hot cocoa with cayenne pepper, which is how my husband drinks it.
I'm not a fan of anything with peppers in it, so I drink turmeric cinnamon hot chocolate.

Turmeric Hot Chocolate Benefits
Turmeric is a yellow spice that's often used in Indian cooking. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a powerful anti inflammatory and antioxidant.
Curcumin only makes up about 3 percent of the weight of turmeric. Further, curcumin is poorly absorbed into your bloodstream.
In order to get the full benefits of turmeric and curcumin, you need to add black pepper. Black pepper has piperine, which can help your body absorb 200 times more curcumin.
I do also want to note that curcumin is a fat soluble substance, so you have to have it with some fat or oil. That is why I add some coconut oil to my turmeric hot chocolate.
Here are some turmeric hot chocolate benefits:
- Turmeric is a natural anti inflammatory. It can help reduce chronic inflammation that can lead to other diseases.
- Turmeric is high in antioxidants that can neutralize free radicals in the body.
- Turmeric may act like a natural antidepressant. In a study, turmeric did improve depression symptoms in rats.
- Turmeric can help reduce heart disease. There have been several studies that look promising.
- Curcumin may also help prevent and treat cancer. A few studies show that it may be a natural treatment.
I find these studies and turmeric hot chocolate benefits fascinating. Personally, I take turmeric as a supplement every day. You can also take turmeric in this turmeric ginger shots recipe.

What is the Best Way to Consume Turmeric?
While I take a turmeric and black pepper supplement daily, I also like to supplement with turmeric hot chocolate.
It's thought that the best way to consume turmeric is in a liquid. This is because a liquid is easier to break down for your body than a solid. This helps your body absorb the substance easier and more effectively.
This is why I like to make turmeric hot cocoa to boost my consumption. I also add turmeric to my homemade onion soup mix without been bouillon.
What Are the Negative Side Effects of Turmeric?
Turmeric has helped me a lot, but there are some side effects. It can cause an upset stomach, acid reflux, or headaches. High doses of turmeric can also increase your risk of kidney stones.
What Does Cinnamon and Turmeric Do?
You can make turmeric hot cocoa with either cinnamon or cayenne pepper. Cinnamon is also a natural anti inflammatory, which can help reduce chronic inflammation.
I also like the taste of cinnamon with my cocoa because the flavors complement each other well.
I always keep cinnamon and turmeric in my pantry. See what I consider the best herbs and spices to have on hand.
Is Cocoa Powder Anti Inflammatory?
Cocoa is one of the highest foods in polyphenols and has a lot of flavanols. Flavonols are natural anti inflammatory substances and also antioxidants.
Not only does this turmeric hot chocolate recipe taste great, but it's also good for you!
Turmeric Hot Cocoa Ingredients
To make a turmeric hot chocolate recipe, you will need:
- Milk choice. You can either use cow's milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk. Oat milk is my personal favorite because it has a milder flavor. However, you can use what you prefer.
- Unsweetened cocoa. Since you're getting most of the flavor for your turmeric hot cocoa from the cocoa powder, I recommend using a good brand. Hershey's Cocoa Powder is natural and made with 100 percent cacao. I also like Anthony's organic cocoa powder for an affordable higher end brand. Finally, use Ghirardelli Majestic Premium cocoa powder for a delicious taste. It's Dutch processed, and it has a great taste and smell.
- Ground turmeric. I get bigger quantities of herbs and spices from Mountain Rose Herbs. For smaller quantities, try Grassroots Herb Supply on Etsy.
- Coconut oil. Use refined coconut oil if you don't like the taste of unrefined coconut oil. The fat in the coconut oil helps your body absorb more curcumin from the turmeric. You can also add butter instead.
- Black pepper. Black pepper helps increase the absorption of the curcumin.
- Cayenne pepper or cinnamon. Both give flavor and anti inflammatory benefits for your turmeric hot chocolate recipe. Both are optional.
- Honey. I recommend using raw honey. You can also use maple syrup, stevia, monk fruit, or your favorite sweetener.
Turmeric Hot Chocolate Recipe
Step #1
Pour milk in a small saucepan. Add the cocoa powder, turmeric, and coconut oil. Stir well. Heat until hot, but do not let it boil. Stir often.
Step #2
Remove from heat. Add a pinch of black pepper and the cinnamon and cayenne pepper if desired. Add honey or sweetener to taste.
Step #3
Pour into a mug. Serve warm.
This makes one cup of turmeric hot cocoa. You can drink this daily for turmeric hot chocolate benefits or drink as needed.
Too much turmeric can cause a stomach ache or headache, so limit to one cup a day, especially if you also take turmeric supplements.
