How to Make Laundry Scent Booster

I switched to making my own laundry detergent for several reasons.  I wanted to save money, and the scents were killing my sinuses.

At first, I didn't scent my laundry detergent at all.  I didn't miss the scent at all.

Over time though, I started to miss the scent.  I started adding essential oils to the detergent, but it it takes a lot of oils to scent a gallon at a time.

Now I just use a homemade laundry scent booster and add a few drops to that.

What Are Laundry Scent Boosters?

Laundry scent boosters are a supplement that you can add to your washing machine when washing clothes. They help to boost the scent of the detergent while removing stains, softening clothes, or aiding in some other related way.

There are a variety of commercial laundry scent boosters on the market, each with different smells and functions. This article will teach you how to make your own diy laundry scent booster!

Making your own natural scent booster for laundry is often recommended over store bought products because you can use natural scents like essential oils or natural fragrance oils

What Are Laundry Scent Boosters Made Of?

Commercial laundry scent boosters are typically composed of two primary ingredients: polyethylene glycol and fragrance. The first issue here is that fragrance can mean pretty much anything.

In fact, many companies use a mixture of chemicals to create a specific fragrance. These chemicals can be allergenic, or even toxic, but you would not have any way of knowing as you do not know what chemicals are used in some products.

Homemade laundry scent boosters give you the ability to add in only the ingredients you want, and the recipe in this article uses all natural ingredients.

This means that you will be making a totally natural scent booster for laundry!

Secondly, polyethylene glycol is derived from petroleum.  It's sometimes used as a laxative, so it can cause stomach upset if kids get into them.

Polyethylene glycol scores a 3 from EWG, but you can do your own research.

This is why many are learning how to make diy laundry scent booster recipes, as they have more control over what they put into their laundry.

What Can I Use Instead Of A Scent Booster?

If you want to avoid using a scent booster, but still want something to help with the odor of your clothes, there are a few options you can try other than a diy laundry scent booster.

You might try a scented detergent, as it will clean your clothes and leave them with a smell of your choice.

You might also wish to try an after-wash spray that you spray onto your dry clothes. This means that you can spray only the clothes you want to as well, rather than a whole loads worth.

Try this homemade spray to remove odors from fabric.

Can You Make Your Own Laundry Scent Booster?

Yes, you absolutely can learn how to make laundry scent booster at home. Further, it is often better to make your own as it is cheaper and you decide what goes into the recipe.

This means you can control for potential allergens or toxins that may be present in store bought laundry scent boosters. Further, you can ensure that the ingredients will not harm your clothes when you make your own essential oil laundry scent booster.

What Is The Best Essential Oil For Laundry?

There are a variety of essential oils that you can use for laundry.  Here are some of my favorite single oils and blends for laundry:

If you want more variety than essential oils can give you, you can also try these natural fragrance oils from Nature's Oils.

What Does Epsom Salt Do In Laundry?

Epsom salt has a few benefits that you can take advantage of. For instance, it can help to whiten your white clothes. Further, it is known to remove or help remove stains from clothes as well.

Epsom salts can also help to keep your fabric soft and reduce the amount of static pull that your clothes have. You can access all of these benefits with this epsom salt laundry scent booster recipe!

What Does Baking Soda Do In Laundry?

Baking soda can be really beneficial when used in laundry, because it is great for balancing pH levels in your washing machine. It helps to soften the water so that you can use less of your other products, such as detergent, and still get the same results.

Further, it can help to control excess suds in your washing machine meaning less buildup in the system and a more efficient cleaning cycle overall. This is why baking soda is a primary ingredient in this diy natural laundry scent booster.

How to Use Homemade Laundry Scent Boosters

You can use homemade laundry scent boosters during your normal washing cycles. I would not recommend using this diy laundry scent booster for every load, but rather, recommend that you use it on a schedule.

You should use only when you need to depending on what detergent you use and what other products you use in your washing machine. If you use a fragrant detergent, you will not need to use this product as often.

Further, if you bleach your whites or use another stain remover on your clothes you will need to use this homemade laundry scent booster quite as often.

This recipe is safe for HE washers, though you should always check your machine and ensure that any product you put into it is safe.
