How to Make Wood Polish (Non Toxic 2 Ingredient Recipe)

While commercial wood polishes promise quick fixes, they often contain synthetic chemicals that may damage the wood or pose risks to health and the environment. A simple, effective alternative lies in a DIY wood polish made from natural ingredients: beeswax and coconut oil. This sustainable recipe is a safe, cost-effective way to revive and protect wooden surfaces, breathing life back into cherished furniture and décor.

Beeswax Wood Polish Recipe

Creating your own wood polish offers numerous advantages. First, it’s eco-friendly—free of harmful additives, toxins, and unnecessary packaging.

Second, it’s economical; the ingredients cost far less than branded products.

Most importantly, it enhances the wood's natural appearance, bringing out its grains and details while forming a protective layer that guards against wear and tear.

Regular use prolongs the lifespan of wooden surfaces, making this an investment in both sustainability and aesthetics.

Ingredients and Supplies

The amounts are below in the printable how to card.

BeeswaxBeeswax forms a protective barrier that repels water, prevents scratches, and add a subtle sheen to wood surfaces.

Coconut Oil.  Use coconut oil in your DIY wood polish to penetrate the wood to replace lost moisture.  It helps prevent cracking and drying while restoring the beauty of the natural wood grain.

Essential Oils.  Essential oils are optional for a non toxic wood polish.  You can add lemon essential oil or orange essential oil for a natural scent if you'd like.

Double Boiler.  I use a double boiler to heat oils because it uses indirect heat.  If you don't have a double boiler, you can use a mason jar placed on a canning ring in a pot of water.

Directions

Step #1

Place coconut oil and beeswax in a double boiler.  Heat on medium low until the beeswax and oil are melted.  Stir often.

Step #2

Once the oil and beeswax are melted remove from heat and add the essential oils if you're using them.

Step #3

Carefully pour the homemade wood polish into a 4-ounce jar and let cool completely.

Why Choose Beeswax and Coconut Oil?

The combination of beeswax and coconut oil is a harmonious blend. Beeswax acts as a shield, safeguarding the surface, while coconut oil penetrates to restore and nourish from within.

Together, they deliver a comprehensive solution that is as functional as it is environmentally friendly. Unlike synthetic polishes, this duo rejuvenates wood naturally, ensuring a longer-lasting, healthier finish.

You can also use olive oil in place of all or part of the coconut oil.  It works well to add moisture to the wood.  Olive oil, however, is softer than coconut oil.  You may need to increase the amount of the beeswax.

Types of Wooden Surfaces Suitable for This Polish

This DIY polish is versatile, suitable for various types of wood and finishes. It can revive furniture like dining tables, chairs, and cabinets, refresh wooden floors, and even restore smaller decorative items such as picture frames or carved bowls.

However, it’s not suitable for painted or laminated surfaces, where it may not adhere properly.

How to Use the Wood Polish

  1. Prepare the Surface: Clean the wooden surface to remove dust, dirt, and grime. A damp cloth works well for this.
  2. Apply the Polish: Scoop a small amount of polish onto a soft, lint-free cloth.
  3. Work in Circles: Rub the polish into the wood using circular motions, ensuring even coverage.
  4. Buff the Surface: Use a clean cloth to buff the surface, creating a smooth, polished finish.

How often you need to polish depends on the type of wood and its usage. For everyday furniture, once every two to three months is sufficient.

High-traffic surfaces, like dining tables or floors, may benefit from more frequent applications, especially during drier seasons when wood is prone to cracking.

Be careful not to use too much polish because it can leave a sticky residue.  Start with a small amount and add more as needed.

This polish is not to be used on painted or varnished wood, as it may not bond effectively or could alter the finish.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store your wood polish in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight. In a properly sealed container, the polish can last up to a year. If it develops an unusual odor or texture, it’s time to make a fresh batch.
